00 · Curatorial argument

Before the first room

A quiet computer is a recent ideal. Earlier machinery rotated, stepped, latched, rang and negotiated in rooms shared with people. Some sounds were intentional signals, some were unavoidable evidence of physical work, and some became interfaces only because listeners learned to interpret them. This route follows the moment when noise crosses that boundary. A motor is not speaking in a human sense, yet a change in its rhythm can still answer a practical question: Is the machine alive? Has it found the track? Is the line busy? Does the institution know something changed?

Listen without reducing every sound to nostalgia. The six rooms ask who was allowed to understand the acoustic evidence and who merely had to endure it. A trained ear could hear useful distinctions that a newcomer experienced as chaos. A household could know a modem had seized the telephone without seeing the screen. A station hall could hear a timetable update before any one traveller could read it. Sound distributed state beyond the designed display. It made private operations public, sometimes helpfully and sometimes without consent.

  1. 01 · Station

    Agreement has a voice

    Listen for phases, not melody.

    The modem handshake is the route's clearest example of an engineered sound becoming vernacular knowledge. Answer tone, probing, training and the final transition into data mode belong to a procedure for discovering what a particular telephone call can carry. The pitches are not a performance added to make the process comprehensible; they are part of the process, accidentally broadcast through a speaker.

    Notice how quickly you begin to predict success. Repetition makes an expert from exposure alone. The circuit announces that it is still negotiating, and silence acquires two opposite meanings: settled connection or failed attempt. The screen disambiguates later. The ear reports first.

  2. 02 · Station

    A head searches in public

    Compare continuous reading with long mechanical jumps.

    A floppy drive makes logical layout audible. The file appears to software as a named whole, but the mechanism may find its pieces on separated tracks. Each seek converts an invisible discontinuity into a click and pause. When adjacent sectors arrive under the head, the sound becomes steadier; when the file is scattered, the drive seems indecisive because its arm really is travelling elsewhere.

    This is diagnostic listening rather than a designed chime. Users learned to distinguish normal work, repeated retries and alarming silence. The drive gave evidence that a frozen-looking screen could not: matter was still moving in pursuit of the request.

  3. 03 · Station

    The program is sound

    Treat the tones as stored material, not accompaniment.

    With a data cassette, sound is neither status nor by-product. It is the program's physical representation. The recorder advances every second in order while the computer measures transitions and attempts to recover bytes. A dropout heard midway is already a damaged piece of the program, although the loader may continue before admitting that recovery has failed.

    The acoustic wait creates household rituals: volume marks, alignment adjustments, silence around the desk. People act on what they can hear because random access and detailed error reports are absent. The ear becomes an auxiliary instrument attached to a fragile analogue channel.

  4. 04 · Station

    A page occupies a telephone

    Separate call procedure from image transmission.

    A fax call has layers of sound: dialling, answer, capability negotiation and the sustained coded transfer of the page. Office users did not need to decode the signal, but they could hear whether the far machine answered and whether the transaction reached its long, purposeful middle. The shared telephone network gave the document an audible corridor.

    Unlike the cassette, the human-readable page reappears somewhere else. The sound belongs to an intermediate form, a temporary conversion from marks to signal and back to marks. The room asks you to attend to that interval rather than treating sending and arrival as a single click.

  5. 05 · Station

    The machine summons a hand

    Hear the difference between work and request.

    Installation alternates mechanical reading with interruption. A disk spins, the head moves, data copies—and then activity falls away because the machine needs a numbered volume it cannot retrieve by itself. The prompt on screen is explicit, but the sudden absence of drive noise often tells the operator to look up before the words are read.

    Here silence is a call bell. The user enters the circuit as a slow, capable peripheral who can recognize a label, eject one object and insert another. Sound coordinates human and machine without being the official control surface.

  6. 06 · Station

    An institution turns over

    Listen first; read second.

    The split-flap board enlarges acoustic state until it fills a public hall. Each character must pass through intermediate leaves to reach the requested letter. One small correction produces a local flutter; many revised rows create a rolling event that lifts heads across the room. Travellers hear the scale of the update before knowing whether it concerns them.

    This is not merely noisy display technology. It is a form of public synchronization. The institution reveals that its schedule has changed, all listeners reorient at once, and only then do individuals locate their own train or flight. Mechanical duration becomes social warning.

Exit · Reflection

At the end of this route

At the end of the circuit, ask what contemporary devices have gained by becoming quiet. Silence can reduce disturbance, but it also concentrates knowledge inside private screens and inaccessible logs. Haptic taps, notification tones and animated indicators attempt to return selected evidence under software control. The older machines leaked more than designers intended; that leakage sometimes gave their users a richer account of state. The route does not argue that noise was better. It asks whether a perfectly silent object owes us another honest way to tell that it is working, waiting, or asking for help.
