Seek and Return

A read head hunts across a spinning disk for a file scattered in pieces.

Watch the head position. Contiguous reads are quick; the long jumps are what cost you.

Runs for about 24 seconds in real time. It cannot be skipped, because a wait you can skip is not a wait.

Sound in this room is synthesised on the spot, not sampled from any device. It never starts on its own.

Museum label

A floppy disk stored data on a thin magnetic sheet, read by a head that had to be physically moved to the right track. Each move took time, and the drive did not move quietly.

A file written all at once sat in neighbouring tracks and loaded quickly. A file edited many times was scattered, and loading it meant stepping the head back and forth across the disk, over and over.

The sound of a slow load was therefore diagnostic. Experienced users could hear fragmentation before any tool reported it.

Inside the machine

What was actually happening?

A floppy was a flexible magnetic surface divided into concentric tracks and smaller sectors. Reading was not abstract: a motor spun the medium while a stepper mechanism placed a real head above the requested track.

The operating system asked for logical pieces of a file. If those pieces were adjacent, the drive could keep reading. If they were scattered, the head stepped away, waited for the desired sector to rotate underneath it, read, then stepped again.

Capacity grew while the gestures remained visible. IBM's first shipped 8-inch read-only disk held about 80 KB—roughly equivalent, the Computer History Museum notes, to thousands of punched cards. Smaller 5.25- and 3.5-inch formats later made the same physical choreography personal.

Outside the machine

The human loop.

A drive's chatter was a form of evidence. It said the program had not frozen; somewhere beneath the desk a head was still looking. Silence could be more alarming than noise.

Users developed rituals around fragile media: labels in careful handwriting, write-protect tabs, duplicate disks, cleaning kits and the instinct never to touch the exposed magnetic surface.

Contemporary descendant

The wait did not disappear.

Solid-state storage removed the seek sound but not locality. Databases, caches and filesystems still arrange data so nearby work can be done together. 'Seek' became a metaphor after the arm itself disappeared.
