Reconstructing Delay

A curatorial method for exhibiting experiences that left few objects

Standards describe mechanisms, memories preserve consequences, and interactive reconstruction holds the gap between them open.

Opening scene

A museum receives no modem, no cassette and no disk—only a web browser and a question: can a vanished wait be exhibited? The obvious solution is imitation. Draw an old screen, play a recording, place a decorative progress bar around a fixed timer. The result may feel familiar, but familiarity can hide weak history. Which machine is being copied? Whose duration is treated as normal? Is the sound functional evidence or copyrighted decoration? What does the visitor actually learn by waiting?

Reconstruction begins when those questions are treated as part of the object. The goal is not to deceive a visitor into believing that old equipment is present. It is to make a mechanism available for inspection through new code while preserving the uncertainty around any representative performance. A reconstruction should reveal its seams. Its honesty is not a limitation; it is the method.

Start with a sequence of causes

A standard can establish what had to happen before interpretation asks what it meant.

Technical standards are valuable because they describe procedures with less dependence on later memory. V.8, V.34 and V.90 distinguish stages of modem operation. T.4 and T.30 separate fax representation from session procedure. The PNG and GIF specifications define concrete interlace orders. RFCs describe point-to-point configuration, streaming segments and buffers. These records give reconstruction a causal skeleton.

A skeleton is not a lived experience. A recommendation may specify capability without establishing the rate achieved in one household. A format tells us pixel order without telling us which images created suspense. Documentation records an intended mechanism, while products, networks and users introduce variation. The responsible move is not to abandon the standard, but to state what kind of claim it can support.

Keep machine time and human time apart

The operation's duration is only one component of the wait.

Corbató's description of batch feedback shows why runtime cannot stand for turnaround. An error may be discovered quickly inside a loop that returns understanding hours later. The same distinction applies throughout the collection. A fax page occupies a call and a shared office ritual. A disk seek occurs in milliseconds but becomes noticeable through repetition. A render includes queueing, computation, review and possible rerun.

Reconstruction should therefore identify where the visitor is positioned. Are they listening during negotiation, operating the next medium, watching evidence of work, or waiting beyond an opaque queue? A generic countdown flattens these roles. Interaction becomes historically meaningful when it preserves the relation between machine state and human obligation, even if the real duration must be compressed.

Do not impersonate the artefact

Original visual and acoustic language can preserve behaviour without copying a product.

Commercial interfaces, logos, screenshots and recordings carry histories of authorship and ownership. They also pull interpretation toward a particular brand. This collection uses invented system names, original layouts, procedural graphics and synthesised sound. The resulting apparatus belongs visibly to the museum. It can refer to a period mechanism without claiming to be an emulator or restored device.

Abstraction also allows comparison. The same typographic and spatial system can hold a batch queue, an interlaced image and a departure board while their behaviours remain distinct. Consistency makes the museum legible; difference resides in the causal choreography. The danger is making every wait into the same animation. To avoid that, each room gives motion a mechanism-specific reason: rotation, traversal, buffering, negotiation, reordering or physical intervention.

Cite the boundary of knowledge

A bibliography should support claims and expose where interpretation begins.

The reading room places institutional records beside original essays. Sources are not decorative authority. Each is connected to the kind of evidence it contributes: specification, vendor documentation, research paper, service manual or museum history. Dataset-specific results remain attached to their populations. Representative technical values are labelled as representative. A protocol ceiling is not presented as an everyday measurement.

The prose does not masquerade as quotation. Curatorial interpretation can be assertive while remaining visibly authored. It asks what a mechanism did to attention, domestic life or institutional power, then gives readers the records needed to inspect factual foundations. This division protects both forms of writing. Sources do not need to have said the interpretation, and interpretation does not need to pretend that evidence speaks without a curator.

Make the simulation hospitable

Access and disclosure are part of fidelity, not exceptions to it.

A reconstruction must decide how much historical inconvenience to reproduce. This museum guarantees that simulations end, permits sound only after a visitor chooses it, and responds to reduced-motion preferences. Canvas and procedural graphics receive textual equivalents. Keyboard operation does not depend on hover. These decisions change the sensory path while preserving the informational structure of the exhibit.

The W3C guidance on interaction-triggered animation supports reducing non-essential motion for people who need it. The principle extends beyond compliance. If an exhibit's meaning disappears when motion is reduced, its interpretation is too tightly coupled to spectacle. A robust reconstruction can explain the same causal sequence through timing, text, state and sound in combinations suited to different visitors.
