The evidence behind the wait

Every room begins with a delay people once had to accommodate. This archive keeps the technical record beside the interpretation: what the machine did, what an operator had to do, and which parts of the experience remain uncertain.

Standards establish mechanisms. Reconstructions make vanished states inspectable. Essays build arguments. Composite scenes preserve the scale at which technical waiting entered ordinary rooms.

Reading room 01

How a wait becomes an exhibit

The museum is a reconstruction, not a product demonstration. Research is used to preserve the mechanism and its human consequences without reproducing a branded interface or presenting memory as measurement.

  1. Begin with the mechanism

    A standard, protocol or technical document establishes the sequence of work: what moves, negotiates, buffers, seeks or verifies before a result can appear.

  2. Recover the human time

    Institutional histories and interface research help distinguish machine duration from the time a person spent listening, watching, intervening or returning later.

  3. Rebuild, never impersonate

    The exhibits reproduce behaviours with original code, language, diagrams and synthesised sound. They do not copy historical screens, logos or recordings.

  4. Leave uncertainty visible

    Speeds, environments and individual memories vary. Where the record supports a range rather than a single answer, the exhibit keeps the range instead of inventing precision.

Glossary wall

A field guide to the words machines use for time. Room numbers identify the exhibit where a term is most directly encountered; unnumbered terms run through the whole collection.

A rate of symbols per second. One symbol may encode more than one bit, so baud and bit/s are not synonyms.

The number of data bits transmitted or processed per unit of time, usually stated in bit/s.

A modem's measurement phase, used to adapt its signalling to the particular telephone channel.

Moving a storage device's read/write mechanism to the location that contains requested data.

Sector
A fixed addressable subdivision of a disk track—the small physical destination of many reads and writes.

One complete still image in a moving sequence. Rendering animation repeats work for every frame.

One separately handled unit in a multi-part distribution: a disk, tape or logical storage container.

A mechanical display module whose hinged character leaves rotate through a finite ordered set.

Latency
Delay between cause and observable consequence. Throughput may be high while latency remains long.
Checkpoint
A saved intermediate state from which long work can resume without starting at the beginning.
Jitter
Variation in delay over time; buffers often trade added latency for protection against it.
Bandwidth
The capacity available to carry information. It describes the width of a route, not the time required for the first useful thing to arrive.
Throughput
The amount of useful data that actually completes a journey per unit of time, after overhead, contention and loss have taken their share.
Carrier
A signal whose controlled changes carry information. Detecting one says that a path exists; it does not yet say that two systems agree how to use it.

Packet
A bounded piece of a larger transmission, given enough addressing and control information to travel through a network without the rest beside it.

Acknowledgement
A message sent back to confirm that something arrived. It turns silence from success into uncertainty and makes reliable retry possible.

Retransmission
Sending information again when loss is suspected or reported: the same payload, making a second attempt at the same future.

Timeout
A limit after which an unanswered wait is treated as failure, loss or permission to try another path.
Backoff
A deliberate pause before trying again, often lengthened after repeated failure so many contenders do not all repeat at once.
Hop
One forwarding step along a network route. A short geographic journey can still cross many administrative and computational boundaries.
Spool
A holding area that accepts work faster than a slower peripheral can perform it. The document is received before the paper exists.

Queue
An ordered promise that work has a turn. The ordering rule may express arrival, priority, cost, fairness or institutional power.

Job
A unit of work submitted for execution, usually carrying its inputs and instructions while its owner waits somewhere outside the machine.

Priority
A rule that allows one waiting item to pass another. It is a technical value with an unavoidable opinion about whose time matters first.

Response time
Elapsed time from a request to the system's observable answer. The answer may be completion, an intermediate result or merely proof of life.
Real time
Operation constrained by a deadline in the world outside the computer. It means sufficiently on time, not infinitely fast.
Estimate
A forecast produced from unfinished work and changing conditions. It is evidence about a model of the future, not a measurement of the future itself.

Wait state
A period in which one part of a system cannot advance until another event, resource or timing condition arrives.
Scanline
One ordered horizontal traversal of an image. A sequence of scanlines gives a page a top, a bottom and a visible direction of arrival.

Progressive
An encoding or delivery order that produces an early coarse whole and refines it, rather than completing one region before revealing the rest.

Preload
Work or data acquired before it is immediately needed, exchanging a longer beginning for a lower chance of interruption later.

Verify
To compare a result with an expected value or property after the apparent work is done. Completion waits while completion is checked.

Spinner
A repeating motion that proves the interface is active without claiming how much work exists or how much remains: movement without distance.
Busy cursor
A pointer state that reclassifies the whole interface as occupied, asking the hand to remain still until control returns.
Stall
A period in which visible progress stops although the process has not necessarily failed. A plateau is an observation; its cause remains elsewhere.

Corrections are part of the collection

This is a working archive. Standards change status, institutional pages move, and a cleaner primary record may replace a later summary. A correction does not erase that history; it leaves the next reader a more reliable path through it.

Revision policy

What the museum changes

Broken links are replaced with the closest stable institutional record. Factual claims are corrected against primary specifications where possible. Interpretive language is revised when it turns a range, convention or disputed memory into a false certainty.

Correction protocol

What makes a useful report

Identify the room or archive accession, quote the statement in question, and include a stable source when one exists. Reports about lived experience are welcome too, but are kept distinct from claims about universal operation or performance.

The catalogue describes why each source is present, rather than treating a long list of links as proof by volume. Evidence should shorten the distance to a claim, even in a museum devoted to delay.
