Load From Tape
A program arrives as audio from a cassette, and any dropout is fatal.
The bars are data. When the pattern breaks, the load is already lost — you just do not know it yet.
Runs for about 32 seconds in real time. It cannot be skipped, because a wait you can skip is not a wait.
Sound in this room is synthesised on the spot, not sampled from any device. It never starts on its own.

Home computers of the era often stored programs on ordinary audio cassettes. The data was literally sound, and loading meant pressing play and waiting while the machine listened.
There was no random access and very little forgiveness. A stretched tape, a smear of dust, a slightly misaligned head, and the load failed near the end. The remedy was to rewind and try again, sometimes with the volume nudged a fraction.
A long load built a peculiar kind of attention. You could not do anything else, because you had to be there to hear it fail.

Inside the machine
What was actually happening?
A domestic cassette recorder converted digital bits into tones and stored them as an ordinary audio waveform. Loading reversed the process: the computer measured transitions in the signal and reconstructed bytes.
Tape is sequential. The machine cannot jump directly to a program near the end; the reels must physically carry every earlier second past the head. Counters and handwritten index cards became improvised directories.
Reliability lived in analogue details: azimuth, volume, tape speed, magnetic damage and cheap connectors. A loader could know that the signal had failed long before the user was told.
Outside the machine
The human loop.
The cassette made software behave like a broadcast. Programs had duration, a sound and a beginning you could miss. A copied game was also a copied recording, complete with the imperfections of every generation.
Loading encouraged superstitions because outcomes were probabilistic. Do not touch the desk. Set the volume to the pencil mark. Rewind fully. Try the other side. The ritual gave people something to control.

Contemporary descendant
The wait did not disappear.
Tape never vanished. Data centres still use cartridges for archives because sequential storage can be dense, durable and economical. The home-computer scream became the quiet robot library.
