Defragmentation
Coloured blocks shuffle themselves into order while you watch, hypnotised.
Nothing here is being created or destroyed. Every block you see is only being moved.
Runs for about 34 seconds in real time. It cannot be skipped, because a wait you can skip is not a wait.
Museum label
Files written and deleted over months left a disk in pieces, with fragments of documents spread across the surface. Defragmenting gathered the pieces and laid them out end to end.
The utility usually drew a map: one small square per cluster, coloured by state. The work was slow, but the map moved, and the map was oddly compelling. People watched it the way they watched a fire.
It is one of the few maintenance tasks that produced a satisfying visual result, which may explain why it was performed more often than it was needed.

What was actually happening?
Filesystems divide storage into allocation units. As files grow, shrink and disappear, free units emerge in separate places. A new file may be logically continuous while physically scattered across many locations.
A defragmenter maps those pieces, finds temporary room and moves data until each file occupies fewer contiguous runs. On a mechanical disk this reduces head travel; the cost is reading and rewriting a large part of the volume.
The coloured map is not the operation itself. It is a translation: millions of invisible allocation decisions compressed into a field the eye can inspect.
Outside the machine
The human loop.
Defragmentation turned maintenance into spectacle. The computer was too busy to use, yet unusually willing to explain what it was doing. Watching became the sanctioned activity.
It also offered moral satisfaction. Disorder accumulated through ordinary life; a single long ritual made the disorder legible and appeared to put every object back in place.

Contemporary descendant
The wait did not disappear.
Flash media changed the bargain: there is no mechanical seek arm, and unnecessary rewriting consumes endurance. Optimisation still exists, but modern systems choose operations appropriate to the medium rather than endlessly arranging coloured blocks.
