One Line at a Time

A page crosses the country as sound, arriving slowly from the top down.

You can start reading before the page finishes. That was the point.

Runs for about 30 seconds in real time. It cannot be skipped, because a wait you can skip is not a wait.

Sound in this room is synthesised on the spot, not sampled from any device. It never starts on its own.

A fax machine did not send a document. It sent a description of light and dark along a single line, then the next line, then the next, encoded as tones over an ordinary telephone call.

Because the page arrived in order, you could read the top of a document while the bottom was still in transit. Signatures appeared last. A jam or a dropped call left you holding half a page, and the half you had was the half you started with.

The machine was also a clock. A long page meant a long call, and a long call meant a bill.

Inside the machine

What was actually happening?

Group 3 fax treats a page as a raster of light and dark picture elements. A scanner advances across the document, compresses runs of white and black, and sends the description through a telephone connection.

Before the page comes negotiation: identify capabilities, agree resolution and coding, test the line, then begin. The receiving machine reconstructs the same raster and marks paper as the data arrives.

Because the representation has spatial order, failure has a shape. A call lost halfway through does not produce a corrupt archive with an abstract error; it produces the top half of a page and then absence.

Outside the machine

The human loop.

Fax collapsed distance while preserving ceremony. Someone dialled, someone listened for the far machine, paper moved, a confirmation sheet appeared. Transmission was fast compared with a courier and slow enough to witness.

Offices built etiquette around shared machines: cover sheets, labelled trays, warnings before long documents and the small anxiety of confidential pages arriving in a public room.

Contemporary descendant

The wait did not disappear.

Scanning, email and electronic signatures separated the page from the telephone call. Yet fax persists in regulated workflows because an old, legible ritual can outlive technically superior replacements.
