The Board Updates

Split-flap letters clatter through the alphabet to tell you the wait grew longer.

The delay is announced by sound before you can read it. Mechanical displays leak news.

Runs for about 25 seconds in real time. It cannot be skipped, because a wait you can skip is not a wait.

Sound in this room is synthesised on the spot, not sampled from any device. It never starts on its own.

Museum label

Before screens, public timetables were mechanical. Each character position held a stack of hinged flaps, and changing a letter meant flipping through every letter in between.

The result was a sound the whole hall could hear. A board update was a public event: heads lifted, because the clatter meant something had changed and it might be your train.

The medium carried information the message did not. A short flutter was a small change. A long, rolling clatter across many rows meant the day had gone wrong for everybody.

Inside the machine

What was actually happening?

A split-flap module carries a fixed set of characters on hinged leaves. To reach a requested character, a motor advances the stack through intermediate states until the desired face settles at the front.

One row is an array of independent modules; one board is an array of rows. An update spreads because every character has a different distance to travel and no reason to arrive at precisely the same instant.

The mechanism performs two tasks at once: display the new state and physically erase the old one. During the transition the board exposes its alphabet, a brief inventory of all the messages it could have shown.

Outside the machine

The human loop.

The clatter addressed the entire room before the text addressed an individual. People looked up together. Information had an audible preamble.

A delay announcement changed waiting twice: first the mechanical wait for the board to settle, then the newly extended wait it described. The messenger enacted the message.

Contemporary descendant

The wait did not disappear.

Screens update silently and instantly, so designers add animation to make change perceptible. The mechanical board needed no transition design: transition was the unavoidable substance of the machine.
